Open to all, building community, aspiring to be the best.

Volley Ball Elite1

Mazenod College Volleyball has produced Olympic representatives, a Commonwealth Games Gold Medalist, 216 students representing Victoria, 9 American University Scholarships, 17 National Championships and many more achievements. Aiming in Year 7 to have widespread participation, with all interested enjoying Volleyball, elite teams are then raised through expert coaching and dedicated training. Volleyballers enjoy state of the art facilities with the Provence Centre show court seating 1200 spectators and hosting the Australian Women’s team in 2013. Old Boy Volleyballers also have the opportunity to participate in the Mazenod Volleyball Club once they have finished their time at the College.

A culture of local, state, and national success

For 32 years the aim in December has been to emerge the top out of the 500 state and international teams that descend on the National Championships. Three times Mazenod have achieved that monumental task and three times we were runners up. In our local Catholic and Independent schools competition, Mazenod had dominated, winning 38 out of 40 years of Open A Division. Over 19 years of Associated Catholic College competition, covering five year levels, we have won 85 out of a possible 95 championships. In Victoria we have won 39 State Championships. An incredible achievement!

Building Community

Court success is not as important as building community and valuing the individual. When a Mazenod Volleyball team steps onto a court, the opposition know that we value each member and that mistakes are necessary and matter little. We are lifted by each other. In the playground, the Volleyball bonds are obvious in the groups, as we build a greater Mazenod community. Hopefully never arrogant, we aim to be honourable in defeat. This community is testified by the fact we develop our own coaches with more than 10 ex-students coaching the teams each year.

Aiming Higher

Always pointing to what can be, we encourage students to represent their state and country. More than 216 positions on State teams have been filled by Mazenod students, 10 have played for Australia, and 9 have been offered scholarships at Canadian and United States Universities. The pinnacle has been reached by Damian Schumann who was selected to play for Australia at the 2020 Olympics in Beach Volleyball and winning the Commonwealth Games Gold Medal in 2018 in Brisbane.
