Mazenod Oblate Cricket vs Victoria Police
On Wednesday, 9th October, the 2024 Oblate Cricket training squad played a T20 cricket match against Victoria Police for the Steven Tynan Blue Ribbon Memorial Shield.
In glorious sunshine, Victoria Police won the toss and elected to bat. Their opening batters proved too strong for our bowling attack, with the team racing to 104 before Harjas Kaile (Year 9) finally achieved the important breakthrough.
Despite a few untidy errors with the ball, the energy and enthusiasm in the field were excellent, with captain Aaron D'Souza (Year 11) learning plenty about field placements. Victoria Police finished on 4/227 after 20 overs.
Mazenod ultimately struggled to keep up with the required run rate. Tarique De Mel (Year 11), scoring 22 runs, and Sanithu Palliyaralalage (Year 8), 41 not out, made fine contributions with the bat. We finished on 7/134, resulting in Victoria Police retaining the Steven Tynan Blue Ribbon Memorial Shield.
Thank you to Senior Constable Steve Fernando (MOC1993) for supporting this great initiative, and to the many generous staff at Mazenod for making the day possible.
The match was an invaluable experience for our squad in preparation for the 2024 Oblate Cup in Perth, with the team flying out on 8th December. Finally, congratulations to Harjas Kaile on being awarded the Blue Ribbon Medal for Best Player. Harjas took one wicket in a tidy bowling spell and made an impressive 52 not out.
