In Year 8 and 9, students use Design and Technologies knowledge and understanding, processes and production skills, and design thinking to produce designed solutions. Using CAD (Computer Aided Design) software, students accurately generate original designs and plans, and create prototypes using CNC Hardware including 3D Printers and CO2 Laser Cutters. Students are given the opportunity to gain experience in practical applications including operating hand tools and power tools to create a range of timber and metal projects. The Design and Technology course gives students the underpinning knowledge and skills to enter a vocation in the design, engineering, and trades industry.
Building the future with technology.
—
Design and Technology gives students the opportunity to create products and develop design solutions by following the design process. While Food Technology supports students to develop knowledge, understanding and skills to make healthy, informed food choices and to explore the contextual factors that influence eating habits and food choices.
Year 8 and 9 Design and Technology
Year 8 to 10 Food Technology
In Year 8 to 10, students develop knowledge and skills to understand the importance of a variety of foods in their diet, sound nutrition principles, food preparation skills and food safety. Through the practical application of technologies, using a range of equipment and ingredients, students develop numerous skills including dexterity, coordination, teamwork, communication and self-management. Students evaluate the meals they produce, refine their techniques as they progress and ultimately develop a sense of independence, pride and satisfaction from their ability to create a range food products. This subject offers students a broad range of learning experiences, readily transferable to their home, community and work life.
VCE VET Furnishing and Engineering
Mazenod has a proud history of excellent results in the VCE VET Furnishing and Engineering programs. These subjects can be taken as part of either the VCE ATAR pathway, or the VCE Vocational Major. As part of the ATAR pathway, they attract a study score, like any other VCE subject. The two subjects focus on developing both design and production skills, and the process of project management. Students who successfully complete these programs gain a nationally recognised pre-apprenticeship certificate in addition to the VCE qualification.
