State Volleyball Championships

31 July 2012

Over the weekend, over 70 Mazenod students competed in the Victorian State Schools Cup. It was an extremely successful weekend with 4 out of 5 age groups bringing home a gold medal.

The current Senior St Bernard’s team is the best their School has ever produced. They came out and beat the Mazenod Senior team quite convincingly in the first 2 sets. With some brilliant strategic coaching by Robert Velardo, John Dal Santo and Anthony Smarrelli, the Mazenod Seniors clawed their way back to win the 3rd, 4th and the 5th sets. The game lasted for well over two hours in which afterwards Fr Michael, Joe Moore and Damian Schumann came to the realisation didn’t have any fingernails left.

The Year 7A team, who are still extremely new to the game, listened and responded extremely well to their coach Nick Boesten and managed to defeat Monbulk in the gold medal match who they had lost to in earlier rounds.

Credit must go to the coaches who are all Old Boys. They have been tirelessly coaching the boys since January. We now look forward with high hopes to the National championships which will take place in December.
