NICHOLAS STANLEY – PART TIME SCHOOL BASED APPRENTICE
Congratulations to Nicholas Stanley of Year 11 who last week signed up with Woolworths Supermarkets as their very first part-time Australian School Based Apprentice (ASBA). Nicholas is undertaking a Butchers Apprenticeship at Safeway Endeavour Hills as part of his Senior School Studies in the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning.
ASBAs provide students with the opportunity to commence vocational learning and part-time paid employment whilst still at school. In Nicholas’ case, he will be completing his Mazenod College studies, be working 16 hours per week in the workplace (paid at Apprentice rates) and also attending Trade school at William Angliss Institute of TAFE for 4 full-time weeks in 2009 (Training paid by the employer).
ASBAs provide students with credit towards their VCE or VCAL Certificates. For employers, ASBA provide an opportunity to:

Identify and train potential full time employee

Develop and enhance the supervisory and vocational skills of current employees

Promote individual industries as future career opportunities

Gain a satisfaction of assisting a young person to commence their careers

Receive additional government financial incentives compared to a standard full time apprenticeship
Students in senior secondary schooling may be employed as an Australian School Based Apprentice in many other industries ranging from Agriculture, Automotive, Business, Community Services, Engineering, Food Processing, Horticulture, Hospitality, Information Technology, Retail and Sport and Recreation. Mazenod College also has a Year 12 VCE student who is undertaking an ASBA in Information Technology with RMIT University. Two more Year 11 (VCE & VCAL) students are currently in the process of interviews and selection processes for ASBAs in Sport & Recreation and IT.
If you are interested in finding out more about ASBAs, or parents who may be in the position to offer ASBAs to other students in our College, please contact the Careers Centre for more information.
